The Northern Ethnic Youths Group Assembly (NYEGA) has recently urged the Northern Senators to stand behind Nigerian Senate President, Godswill Akpabio in the interest of the nation. The group conveyed this message through a statement issued by its spokesperson, Mr. Ibrahim Dan-Musa, which was shared with journalists in Abuja over the weekend.

Dan-Musa emphasized that it would be unjust for the North to perceive Senator Ningi’s suspension as anti-Northern, as the National Assembly operates under specific Standing Orders and the actions of the Senate President are in accordance with these rules.

“We implore the political leaders of Northern Nigeria to prioritize national interest, as any actions that threaten our unity are unacceptable during this critical period,” stated Dan-Musa. “We understand that the Senate President is not infallible, and as such, it is important for Northern Senators to show their support for him, just as the southern Senators backed Senator Ahmed Lawan from Yobe state during his tenure as Senate President of the 9th National Assembly.”

The statement also highlighted Senator Akpabio’s commitment to national unity, emphasizing that he has been inclusive of all political zones in his leadership. Dan-Musa pointed out that Senator Abdul Ningi’s suspension was a popular decision, as none of the Senators defended his actions during the plenary session.

The Northern group urged political leaders to adapt to the evolving political landscape, emphasizing that traditional practices are no longer in line with global standards. They called for the North to rally around Akpabio to complete his term, highlighting that the notion of installing another Muslim as Senate President should be discarded.

With the President, Vice President, and Speaker of the House of Representatives all being Muslim, the group argued that appointing a Muslim from the North to succeed Akpabio would not serve the national interest. They urged for a more holistic approach that transcends religious considerations.

In conclusion, NYEGA emphasized the importance of unity and cooperation within the Senate, urging Northern Senators to support Akpabio for the greater good of the nation. They called for a departure from outdated practices and a shift towards embracing new political realities. The group emphasized the need for political leaders to prioritize national interest above all else in their decision-making processes.
