President Bola Tinubu is set to visit Qatar next month to engage in business deals with Qatari authorities, according to Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs. The minister dismissed claims that Qatar’s authorities rejected the move to host the Nigerian president. This clarification came in response to a leaked memo that suggested Qatar’s Minister of Trade and Investment would not be available for Tinubu’s visit.
The ministry clarified on February 24 that President Tinubu’s visit to Qatar was scheduled for March 2-3. Despite a trending memo online claiming that Qatar was not ready for a business parley with Nigeria, Tinubu’s visit was still set to proceed as planned.
The leaked memo from the embassy of Qatar in Nigeria stated that the Qatari Ministry of Commerce and Industry would not be able to host Tinubu due to official missions outside the country and a web summit event during the suggested visit period. However, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, Nigeria’s Foreign Minister, refuted these claims in a statement shared by Tinubu’s special adviser on information and strategy, Bayo Onanuga. Tuggar affirmed that Tinubu would indeed be visiting Qatar as scheduled.
In another development, a BBC report compared the number of days President Tinubu spent abroad within nine months of office to his predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari. Tinubu reportedly spent 71 days outside Nigeria, while Buhari spent 59 days outside the country during his tenure. The report highlighted the importance of international travel for investment deals and diplomacy, despite criticism from opposition leader Atiku Abubakar.
Overall, the confirmation of President Tinubu’s upcoming visit to Qatar dispels any speculation about the rejection of his proposed business dealings with Qatari authorities. Tinubu’s trip is a significant step towards strengthening diplomatic relations and exploring business opportunities between Nigeria and Qatar. The scheduled visit showcases Nigeria’s commitment to expanding its economic partnerships and fostering international cooperation.
As President Tinubu prepares to embark on his journey to Qatar in March, the Nigerian government remains optimistic about the potential benefits of this visit for both countries. The ongoing engagement between Nigeria and Qatar signifies a mutual interest in promoting economic growth and strategic collaboration on regional and global issues. President Tinubu’s visit to Qatar is a testament to Nigeria’s proactive approach to fostering meaningful relationships with key international partners.
