The recent political crisis in Rivers state has seen Governor Sim Fubara receive significant support from the women in the state, including Nollywood veterans, amidst the turmoil and political unrest in the region. The women staged a peaceful walk in strategic locations in Rivers state to demonstrate their solidarity with the governor. This act of solidarity comes in the wake of a strong statement made by Wike, the former governor, who had said “nobody can challenge them in 2027.”
The women from the 23 local government areas of Rivers state marched through the streets of Port Harcourt, the state capital, on Thursday, February 22 to declare their unwavering support for Governor Sim Fubara. It is worth noting that the minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Wike, had anointed and worked for Fubara to succeed him as state governor. However, barely six months after Fubara ascended to office, he fell apart with his known political godfather, sparking intense political turmoil in the state.
Under the auspices of Rivers Women Unite for Sim, the stakeholders began the walk from the popular CFC junction along Aba Road to the Polo Club in GRA, creatively driving their messages for peace and support for Governor Fubara. The peaceful demonstrators wore white T-shirts, red and blue caps, and displayed placards with different inscriptions expressing their unyielding support for Governor Fubara and calling for peace in the state.
The inscriptions on the placards read “Allow Governor Sim to work in Peace,” “O God give us peace in Rivers, give peace a chance,” “Peace is priceless,” and “Rivers mothers stand for peace” among others. Notably, the peaceful demonstration attracted a diverse group of women from different walks of life, including Nollywood personalities and members of the Labour Party (LP).
Comedian, Julius Agwu, and Hilda Dokubo, the state chairperson of the Labour Party (LP), were among the personalities who joined the peace walk. They observed a minute of silence for the late Chief Executive Officer of Access Holdings, Dr. Herbert Wigwe, his wife, and son. This was a solemn moment to remember the departed souls and underscore the importance of peace amidst the ongoing political turmoil in the state.
The peaceful demonstration came amidst a cryptic message by Wike, the former governor, who brazenly declared that he and his team would be undefeatable in the 2027 elections. This veiled message to Governor Fubara insinuated a power struggle and underscored the deeply rooted political tensions in Rivers state.
In summary, the recent display of unity and solidarity by the women of Rivers state, including Nollywood veterans and political stakeholders, serves as a powerful expression of support for Governor Fubara amidst the prevailing political crisis. The peaceful walk and the messages conveyed through the placards highlight the desire for peace and unity in the state, calling on all political actors to allow Governor Sim Fubara to lead Rivers in peace. This demonstration of support underscores the significance of women’s voices in the political landscape of Rivers state and their role in advocating for peace and stability in the region.
