Senior Special Assistant to the President on Citizenship and Leadership, Ms. Rinsola Abiola, has emphasized the importance of appointing young people into positions where they can influence decisions of government, following the example set by President Bola Tinubu. In a statement issued on Thursday, she called on state governors to prioritize youth inclusion and promote principles and integrity in public service.

During a forum organized by the Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy in Lagos, Abiola addressed the topic of “Youth in the Driver’s Seat: Fostering Leadership Capacities for Effective Governance.” She highlighted the significance of allowing youths to participate in governance to bring innovative ideas into policy formulation and promote a sense of inclusion.

Commending President Tinubu for appointing a significant number of young people into key positions, Abiola praised the Lagos State Government for making deliberate efforts to include young individuals in decision-making structures. However, she expressed concern that the Federal Government and other states did not fully reflect this reality.

Hon. Mohammed Bello El-Rufai acknowledged that some states also have young people in key positions, but emphasized the need for more youth inclusion across the board. Abiola emphasized the positive impact of youth inclusion on administration and government, citing examples from President Tinubu and Governor Abdulrazaq of Kwara State.

Abiola highlighted the innovative ideas and can-do spirit that young people bring to governance, noting their ability to engage with development partners and the private sector effectively. She emphasized the importance of young people feeling a sense of belonging in government and ensuring that government represents the population it serves.

Encouraging young people in positions of authority to set positive examples and mentor others, Abiola advocated for increased youth inclusion within political party structures and government at all levels. She emphasized the value of young individuals contributing their perspectives and experiences to decision-making processes.

In conclusion, Abiola urged state governors to follow the examples set by President Tinubu and Governor Abdulrazaq in prioritizing youth inclusion in government. She emphasized the need for principles, integrity, and a genuine commitment to nation-building in public service, calling for a collective effort to empower young people to drive effective governance and contribute to the development of the nation.
