Unknown gunmen suspected to be kidnappers stormed the residence of Sobomabo Jackrich, the governorship candidate of the National Rescue Movement in Rivers state, and abducted him on Monday, April 8. This alarming incident took place in Usokun in the Degema local government area of the state. The gunmen, dressed in military uniform, forcefully took Jackrich to an unknown location.

Tragically, two of Jackrich’s loyalists were found at his residence during the raid and were shot dead by the assailants. Their remains were also taken away alongside Jackrich. The Rivers state police command confirmed this distressing development.

Sobomabo Jackrich, popularly known as ‘Egberipapa,’ is a former militant leader who embraced amnesty during the late President Umar Yar’Adua’s tenure. His media aide, Soibibo Sokari, confirmed the killing and abduction of Jackrich to the media. An anonymous source revealed that the military took custody of the ex-militant leader.

Despite the distressing events, the acting Deputy Director of the Army Public Relations, Lt Col. Jonah Danjuma, is yet to address the situation. However, the spokesperson for the Rivers state police command, Grace Iringe-Koko, clarified that Jackrich’s situation is not a kidnapping. She stated that he is currently under the protection of security personnel.

In a similar incident, the chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo state, Tony Aziegbemi, was recently kidnapped and held captive. He was abducted in Benin City after a meeting with Governor Godwin Obaseki. The kidnappers demanded a ransom of N500 million from Aziegbemi’s family. Fortunately, he was released from captivity after some days and reunited with his family.

These recent events in Rivers state and Edo state highlight the prevalent security challenges facing politicians and public figures in Nigeria. Kidnappings and abductions have become a growing concern, leading to heightened anxiety and fear among citizens and political stakeholders.

It is essential for security agencies to intensify efforts in safeguarding the lives and properties of individuals, especially those in positions of influence. The safety and security of all citizens, regardless of their status, should be a top priority for the government and law enforcement agencies.

As the investigations continue into the abduction of Sobomabo Jackrich and the release of Tony Aziegbemi, it is crucial for swift action to be taken to ensure justice is served and prevent future occurrences of such heinous crimes. The public and the authorities must work together to address the root causes of insecurity and protect the lives of all Nigerians.
