Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, recently highlighted a major issue within Nigeria’s political landscape – the lack of identity and ideology among political parties. This lack of clear direction often leads to frequent defections from one party to another, as politicians struggle to align themselves with a party that truly represents their beliefs and values.

During the inauguration of the party’s zonal coordinators across the country, Mr. Ganduje emphasized the urgent need for this situation to change for the better. He announced that the zonal coordinators would be responsible for overseeing the six geo-political zones of the country, with each coordinator playing a crucial role in the party’s operations and outreach efforts.

Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo was appointed as the coordinator for the South East, while Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq of Kwara took on the role for the North-Central. Governor Mai Mala Buni was named the coordinator for the North East, Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State for the North West, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for the South West, and Governor Bassey Otu for the South South.

Mr. Ganduje stressed that the governors were expected to engage in regular communication with the party’s leadership and work towards reconciling any internal conflicts within their respective zones. They were also tasked with mobilizing governors within their zones to actively participate in the party’s activities and collaborate on initiatives to enhance progress and unity.

Furthermore, the coordinators were called upon to support the party in resource mobilization efforts, contribute to party activities, and undertake any additional responsibilities assigned by the party. Mr. Ganduje emphasized the need for active and functional party offices at all levels, from the local government to the state level, to ensure continuous engagement and operational efficiency throughout the year.

In response to these directives, Governor Uzodimma, who also serves as the chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF), expressed enthusiasm and appreciation for the party’s new approach to coordination. He highlighted the importance of inclusive participation among all party members, particularly at the grassroots level, to strengthen the party’s presence and engagement across the country.

The initiative to appoint zonal coordinators and enhance coordination within the party signifies a proactive step towards addressing the challenges of identity and ideology in Nigerian politics. By fostering stronger leadership and collaboration among governors and party officials, the APC aims to build a more cohesive and responsive political organization that can effectively address the needs and aspirations of the Nigerian people.
