The Enugu State Police Command recently conducted a raid on Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its Eastern Security Network (ESN) hideouts in the Akwuke area of Enugu metropolis. The operation, which took place at around 2:30 a.m. on a Saturday, resulted in a confrontation between the police and the renegades. The renegades opened fire on the police upon sighting them, but the police were able to overpower them, leading to the neutralization of two renegades.
According to DSP Daniel Ndukwe, the Command’s spokesperson, the police encountered resistance during the raid. However, they were successful in subduing the criminals. Some members of the outlawed group managed to escape with gunshot wounds, while two renegades were neutralized. The police recovered one AK-47 rifle, one Sub-Machine Gun (SMG), one stainless Pump-Action Gun (PAG), along with 27 live and 23 expended rounds of 7.62 mm calibre ammunition.
Additionally, five live cartridges and a small blue-colored Gideon New Testament Bible, suspected to be used to conceal objects like charms, were also confiscated during the raid. The police attribute these weapons and ammunition to the criminal activities of the outlawed group. Investigations are still ongoing to gather more information about the criminal elements and their activities.
The CP, Mr Kanayo Uzuegbu, commended the operatives for their successful operation. He reiterated the command’s commitment to eradicating unrepentant criminals from Enugu State and ensuring the safety and security of the citizens. The CP urged the public to report any individuals with gunshot wounds to the nearest police station or operative, emphasizing the importance of cooperation between the police and the community.
The raid in Akwuke is part of the proactive crime prevention strategies implemented by the state’s Commissioner of Police. The operation was intelligence-guided, targeting the suspected IPOB/ESN hideout. The preliminary investigation revealed that the serial number of the recovered AK-47 had been removed, indicating possible illegal activities involving the weapon.
The police are determined to dismantle criminal networks in the state and prevent further attacks on law enforcement officers. The commitment of the Enugu State Police Command to combating crime and maintaining peace and security in the state remains steadfast. The support and cooperation of the public are essential in achieving these goals and ensuring a safer environment for all residents of Enugu State.
