The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and the Nigerian Police Force have issued a warning to candidates preparing for the 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) regarding the risks of patronizing fake websites. This caution was emphasized during a joint news conference held in Abuja.
Assistant Commissioner of Police and Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, highlighted the existence of several fraudulent websites created by unscrupulous individuals to deceive candidates. These misleading websites are designed to extract personal information such as registration numbers, email addresses, and phone numbers from unsuspecting candidates.
Both JAMB and the Nigeria Police Force expressed strong condemnation for these fraudulent activities and reaffirmed their commitment to safeguarding the interests of candidates and upholding the integrity of the examination process. Adejobi urged parents, guardians, and all stakeholders to ensure that candidates only print their UTME Notification Slips from the official JAMB website, www.jamb.gov.ng. Candidates were advised to access this website from their homes or visit any of the over 700 accredited Computer-Based Test (CBT) centers nationwide.
The police spokesperson elaborated on the deceptive tactics employed by fraudsters during annual assessment and admission exercises and assured that measures were being taken to sensitize candidates and the public about these deceptive practices. Adejobi specified that visiting fake websites would lead candidates to receive unreliable information, potentially causing them to miss out on the forthcoming exams.
Candidates were strongly advised to print their UTME Notification Slips before the specified deadline to access crucial information about their examinations. Any other website offering UTME slip printing services, aside from www.jamb.gov.ng, was deemed fake and aimed at defrauding candidates. Additionally, candidates were cautioned against accessing websites that provide ‘live’ questions and answers, as such materials are prohibited and considered false and deceptive.
A collaborative effort between JAMB and the Nigeria Police Force National Cyber Crime Centre (NPF-NCCC) was announced to effectively address online scam-related issues. Adejobi assured candidates and the public of the force’s unwavering commitment to ensuring a fair and transparent examination process. The Inspector General of Police had instructed the NPF-NCCC to pursue scammers and fraudsters engaged in cyber-related crimes, particularly those involved in creating phishing sites/portals.
JAMB’s spokesperson, Fabian Benjamin, reiterated the Board’s dedication to fulfilling its role and warned candidates of unsolicited messages aimed at defrauding them. The 2024 UTME was scheduled to begin on April 19th and end on April 29th.
In conclusion, candidates were advised to exercise caution, only engage with official JAMB platforms, and refrain from sharing personal information on suspicious websites to protect themselves from fraud and ensure a smooth examination process.
