The Edo State Police Command has assured the public of adequate security for the upcoming Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship primary in Edo State. This statement was made by the Command’s spokesman, SP Chidi Nwabuzor, on Wednesday in Benin while briefing journalists on the preparedness of the Command ahead of primary elections.

Nwabuzor emphasized that the violent delegate primary election of the All Progressives Congress (APC) last Saturday was an eye-opener for the command. He assured that the police would no longer treat any election as just a party affair. The violence at the collation venue of the APC delegate election resulted in serious injuries to some officials of the party and the destruction of journalists’ equipment.

The Edo State Police Command recognizes that the various delegates participating in the election come from different communities across the 18 local government areas of Edo State. Therefore, they are prepared to take the election very seriously to ensure the safety and protection of the lives and properties of the party members.

The Command is working with all other sister security agencies to ensure a peaceful and hitch-free delegate election that cuts across political parties in Edo State. The Commissioner of Police has deployed officers and men for the exercise and is confident that the number and caliber of officers deployed will prevent any form of violence or civil disobedience. However, the participating political parties and their delegates have been warned to behave in a lawful manner and conduct themselves with good behavior.

With the arrival of delegates in Benin City and the upcoming delegate elections for different political parties, the Edo State Police are prepared for a tight schedule and have assured their readiness to ensure that the right thing is done without any violence. The Commissioner of Police, Edo State, CP Funsho Adegboye, is appealing to party members conducting delegate primaries to adhere to the rules of the game and go about it in a lawful manner. Furthermore, the Commissioner has warned officers to arrest anyone found perpetrating or instigating violence.

In conclusion, the Edo State Police Command is committed to ensuring the safety and security of the delegate primaries and is well-prepared to handle any potential issues that may arise. Their collaboration with other security agencies and the deployment of officers for the exercise demonstrate their dedication to upholding the law and maintaining peace during the primary elections.
