Fulani herders in Plateau State are facing a dire situation, as they continue to experience the killing and rustling of their members and cattle in various parts of the state. The Coalition of Fulani Registered Organisations (CFRO) expressed their distress in a statement signed by the CFRO Chairman, Garba Abdullahi Muhammad, and Secretary, Adam Yakubu.
The herders reported that in recent incidents, two herders were killed, and a staggering 339 cattle were rustled in Mangu and Bokkos local government areas. The value of the stolen cattle was estimated at N169,500,000. The CFRO strongly condemned these attacks, attributing them to the actions of the Maghuvwul and Ron militia in Plateau State.
Detailing the specific incidents, the coalition mentioned that on different dates in March 2024, numerous cattle were rustled in various areas and driven across local government boundaries. The herders also mourned the loss of two fellow herders who were tragically killed in separate incidents.
Moreover, the herders lamented the displacement of women, children, and the elderly, and the arbitrary arrest of some members. They highlighted incidents where cows were killed, confiscated, or still held by security forces. The CFRO expressed their commitment to cooperate with authorities in combating criminal activities on the Plateau and called for justice to be served through proper investigations and prosecution of offenders.
Appealing to the federal and state governments, as well as security agencies, the herders requested assistance in recovering the stolen cows that were allegedly kept in the Mangu general area. They urged for increased security measures to protect their livelihoods, prevent further violence, and ensure the safe return of displaced individuals, especially with the imminent rainy season approaching.
Furthermore, the herders pleaded for security agencies to address issues of arms and drug trafficking, and to guarantee unhindered access to grazing areas, water sources, and cattle routes for their herders. They emphasized the importance of conducting thorough investigations to prevent incidents like the destructive retaliation witnessed in Luggere, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area.
In conclusion, the herders called for a balanced and fair approach from security forces to avoid unwarranted arrests and detentions of their community members. They highlighted the need for mutual cooperation between the Fulani herders and law enforcement agencies to restore peace and security in the region.
