Atedo Peterside, a prominent Nigerian entrepreneur and founder of Anap Foundation, recently expressed his disappointment with Senate President Godswill Akpabio’s comments at the funeral of Herbert Wigwe, the late CEO of Access Holdings. The funeral, held in Rivers state, was a solemn occasion following the tragic helicopter crash that claimed the lives of Wigwe, his wife, son, and others in the United States in February.

Peterside took to his social media platform to recount the insensitivity displayed by Akpabio during his address at the funeral. According to Peterside, Akpabio started his speech by complaining that Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 election, received a warmer reception than himself. Peterside criticized Akpabio for making such comparisons at a solemn event where the focus should have been on consoling the grieving family.

In a post on his verified social media account, Peterside stated, “For the record, I was among those who found the Senate President’s comments at the Wigwe Family Funeral in PH to be in poor taste. He began by lamenting that @PeterObi received greater applause than he (Akpabio) got & later told us to join him in consoling the widow who was lying in one of the 3 caskets in front of him. Jokes? Political jibes at a solemn Combined Funeral? Methinks that was self-centred and totally insensitive.”

Peterside’s criticism of Akpabio’s behavior at the funeral has sparked a debate on social media, with many Nigerians echoing Peterside’s sentiments about the inappropriate nature of Akpabio’s remarks. The focus of the funeral should have been on honoring the memory of Herbert Wigwe and offering support to his grieving family, rather than engaging in political comparisons and jabs.

The incident at the funeral has drawn attention to the need for public figures to demonstrate empathy and sensitivity in their interactions, especially during moments of grief and mourning. The role of political leaders and prominent personalities should be to offer comfort and support to those in need, rather than seeking personal validation or recognition.

This controversy highlights the importance of maintaining decorum and respect for the solemnity of funeral ceremonies, regardless of one’s personal or political differences. In times of tragedy and loss, it is crucial for individuals to show compassion, understanding, and unity, rather than engaging in divisive or insensitive behavior.

As the public continues to discuss the incident at Herbert Wigwe’s funeral, it serves as a reminder of the power of empathy and kindness in navigating difficult and emotional situations. In honoring the memory of the departed and supporting their loved ones, it is essential for individuals to prioritize compassion and solidarity above all else.
