Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has criticized the 2023 general election report that was released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). According to Obi, the release of INEC’s report was likened to administering “medicine after death”, indicating that the report came too late to make any meaningful impact.

The 526-page report released by INEC highlighted the delay in uploading presidential election results despite the successful operation of the bimodal voter accreditation system (BVAS). The commission attributed this delay to technical issues, which were later resolved, emphasizing that it did not compromise the integrity of the elections.

Obi, through Dr. Yunusa Tanko, the Chief Spokesperson of the Obi-Datti Campaign Committee, expressed dissatisfaction with the report, referring to it as an ineffective remedy. He emphasized that if INEC had dealt with the issues as they occurred during the election, the report would have been more credible and trustworthy.

In a statement quoted by Daily Trust, Obi stated, “The INEC report is medicine after death. The truth about it is that if INEC actually dealt with this issue as it happened during the election, possibly Nigerians would have believed and trusted this particular report.” He also raised concerns about discrepancies in the report, pointing out that results from other elections on the same day were uploaded without issues.

Obi called for greater accountability from INEC, especially in addressing reported technical glitches promptly. He stressed the need for a review of electoral laws to promote transparency and reduce reliance on the judiciary to determine election outcomes. Additionally, Obi advocated for elections to be finalized at polling units to prevent manipulation and enhance clarity.

His remarks contribute to ongoing scrutiny of the 2023 elections, sparking discussions on electoral integrity and accountability in Nigeria. Obi’s stance reflects a growing sentiment towards improving the electoral process and ensuring fair and transparent elections.

Meanwhile, amidst rumors of internal turmoil within the Labour Party, Obi has dismissed speculations of leaving the party. His media aide, Michael Jude Nwolisa, refuted the reports, labeling them as false and intended to cause unrest. Nwolisa reiterated Obi’s unwavering commitment to the Labour Party, dispelling any doubts about his loyalty and dedication.

In conclusion, Peter Obi’s critique of the 2023 general election report highlights the importance of holding electoral institutions accountable and ensuring transparency in the electoral process. His calls for reforms and increased scrutiny reflect a growing demand for fair and credible elections in Nigeria.
