Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has expressed deep concern over the ongoing security challenges in Nigeria, stressing the importance of providing Nigerian children with a secure and safe learning environment. His reaction came in the wake of the recent abduction of pupils and teachers in Kaduna.

In a statement released by his Chief Spokesman, Dr. Yunusa Tanko, in Abuja, Peter Obi condemned the abduction of over 200 pupils and students, along with a teacher, from local primary and junior secondary schools in Kuriga, Chikun Local Government area of Kaduna. He emphasized the need for authorities to prioritize the safety and security of children, ensuring that they can go to school and learn without fear of criminal activities.

Peter Obi called for a concerted effort to address the prevailing insecurity challenges in Nigeria, particularly in Kaduna, where despite the presence of numerous military and security institutions, incidents of insecurity continue to occur. He stressed the urgency of implementing effective security measures to prevent future occurrences and safeguard the well-being of students and teachers.

The former governor also highlighted the detrimental impact of insecurity on education, noting that the closure of schools due to security concerns has already led to a significant number of out-of-school children in the country. He warned that further attacks on schools would only exacerbate this issue, pushing more children onto the streets and fueling the overall insecurity situation in Nigeria.

Peter Obi urged government officials at all levels to explore all available avenues to secure the safe release of the abducted school children, emphasizing the need for collective action and prayers to overcome the challenges facing the nation. He called on every Nigerian to strive towards creating a safe and secure environment where all children can pursue their dreams and aspirations without fear.

In conclusion, Peter Obi reiterated his commitment to building a “New Nigeria” where the safety and well-being of every citizen, especially children, are paramount. He called for unity, resilience, and determination in facing the current security challenges, emphasizing that a secure and prosperous future is within reach if all Nigerians work together towards a common goal.
