The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) is dedicated to ensuring the stability of the grid despite facing various challenges. Ndidi Mbah, the General Manager of Public Affairs, emphasized the company’s commitment to managing the grid efficiently even amidst persistent low gas supply issues affecting power generation.
In a statement released in Abuja, Mbah highlighted the hard work of TCN’s grid controllers who work tirelessly to balance the grid and prevent any disturbances. She mentioned a grid disturbance on March 28, which was promptly resolved by TCN operators, with power restoration achieved in some areas within 21 minutes.
Acknowledging the collaborative efforts of the Federal Government, particularly the Minister of Power, Mbah mentioned that meetings were held with Generating Companies (GenCos) and Gas Companies (GasCos) to secure a higher volume of gas supply for enhanced power generation. She reiterated the importance of consistent gas availability to sustain optimal power generation and emphasized that low power generation significantly increases grid fragility.
Apart from gas supply challenges, TCN faces various sector-specific hurdles, including vandalism. Mbah noted that vandalism incidents have disrupted transmission operations, sometimes requiring emergency repairs, tower reconstruction, or transmission line replacements. She stressed the critical need for increased community support and vigilance in protecting transmission infrastructure to ensure grid stability.
Mbah also issued a warning about a planned attack on TCN facilities in the Zuba area, urging residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities around power facilities. She emphasized the importance of community involvement in safeguarding power transmission towers and cables, urging everyone, especially those living close to TCN towers nationwide, to collaborate with the company in protecting the infrastructure.
TCN continues to work towards stabilizing the grid amidst challenges and remains committed to ensuring a reliable power supply for the nation. The company appreciates the support of the Federal Government and the Minister of Power in addressing the root causes of low gas supply while urging continued efforts to enhance power generation.
In conclusion, TCN is focused on overcoming obstacles, including low gas supply and vandalism, to maintain grid stability and provide a consistent and reliable power supply to the people of Nigeria. By addressing these challenges and promoting community involvement, TCN aims to strengthen the nation’s power infrastructure and ensure a sustainable energy future.
