A group in the North Central region has shown support for David Ombugadu to become the next Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Known as the PDP Frontliners, this group believes that Ombugadu is the right candidate to succeed Iyorchia Ayu and lead the party to greater heights. This endorsement comes at a time when some prominent members of the party are calling for the removal of the acting chairman, Ambassador Iliya Damagun.

Esther Odili, a journalist with over two years of experience covering political parties and movements, reported from Nasarawa state that the group in the North Central region is pushing for Ombugadu to enter the race for the national chairmanship position of the PDP. Ombugadu, who was the gubernatorial candidate for Nasarawa state in the 2023 election, is seen as a strong contender for the position.

The PDP’s National Executive Committee (NEC) is set to meet soon to decide the fate of Ambassador Iliya Damagun, who has been serving as the acting national chairman since the resignation of Dr Iyorchia Ayu over a year ago. Ayu was removed from his position as national chairman by the Benue state high court in Makurdi, effectively ending his leadership within the party.

The PDP Frontliners group believes that Ombugadu is the best candidate to replace Ayu and lead the party forward. They argue that Ombugadu’s leadership is crucial for revitalizing the party and positioning it for success in future elections. Some stakeholders have already begun consultations to support Ombugadu’s candidacy and ensure that he becomes the consensus candidate for the North-Central region and nationally.

Signed by Alhaji Hussein Mohammed, Mr. Moses Abidemi, and Mr. Dan Okafor, the group’s president, secretary, and publicity secretary, the statement emphasized the need for the party to focus on strategic repositioning and unity to achieve victory in future elections.

In a separate development, 60 House of Representatives members under the PDP have threatened to leave the party if Ambassador Iliya Damagun does not resign immediately. They argue that Damagun, as the acting chairman, has aligned the party with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and must be replaced by someone from the North Central region in accordance with the party’s constitution.

The support for David Ombugadu’s candidacy for the PDP chairmanship position reflects a growing sentiment within the party for new leadership and a renewed commitment to winning future elections. With stakeholders and lawmakers backing Ombugadu, the path seems clear for him to make a significant impact on the party’s direction and prospects.
