The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Edo State Chairman, Chief Odion Olaye, and Benin chief, Osaro Idah, have been elected as National Delegates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State, along with 15 others. These delegates were elected by the delegates who emerged from the ward congresses held in the state last Saturday.

Chief Odion Olaye, who is the NLC chairman, was elected by ward delegates in Oredo local government area, while Osaro Idah was elected by ward delegates in Egor local government area. Other elected delegates include former senators Francis Alimikhena and Yisa Braimah, who represented Edo North Senatorial District.

The ward and national delegates congresses were held in preparation for the party’s governorship primary scheduled for February 22, 2024. These congresses took place in 17 out of the 18 local government areas in the state, with the ward congress election in Etsako Central Local Government Area being canceled due to the alleged abduction of nine electoral officers.

A statement signed by Tony Anenih (Jnr), the State Organizing Secretary, on February 9, notified party members of the conduct of the National Delegates Election in all local government areas of the state, apart from Etsako Central Local Government Area. The congresses were conducted by officials from the National Headquarters of the PDP in Abuja.

The election of national delegates is a significant step in the PDP’s preparations for the upcoming governorship primary in the state. These delegates will play a crucial role in the decision-making process for the party’s candidate in the gubernatorial election.

The involvement of prominent figures such as the NLC chairman and former senators highlights the importance of the PDP’s internal processes and the high stakes involved in the selection of candidates for political offices.

The successful conduct of the ward and national delegates congresses demonstrates the PDP’s commitment to transparency and inclusivity in its internal processes. By ensuring that delegates are elected through a democratic and fair process, the party is positioning itself to present a strong and united front in the upcoming governorship election.

As the political landscape in Edo State continues to evolve, the emergence of the elected national delegates reflects the diverse interests and voices within the PDP. Their role in the party’s decision-making process underscores the importance of inclusive representation and the need to consider the views and priorities of various constituencies within the party.

With the governorship primary on the horizon, the PDP in Edo State is gearing up for a competitive and dynamic political process. The elected national delegates will be instrumental in shaping the party’s approach to the primary and will play a critical role in determining the PDP’s candidate for the gubernatorial election.

Overall, the election of national delegates in Edo State represents a significant development in the PDP’s internal dynamics and sets the stage for a competitive and engaging political process in the lead-up to the governorship primary.
