The Rivers State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has taken a drastic action by expelling Hon. Achor Nna, a kinsman of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, over allegations of misappropriation and misconduct during his time in office. This move came shortly after Nna resigned from his position as the leader of the Obio/Akpor legislative council and declared his support for Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State. The expulsion letter was issued on March 9, 2024, by the PDP Ward 9 Chairman in Obio/Akpor LGA, Collins Chukwu.

The Ward Chairman accused Nna of failing to defend himself against the allegations of misconduct and misappropriation despite multiple invitations to do so. The letter stated that Nna’s inability to address the allegations against him led to his expulsion from the party. This action highlights the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State as different factions compete for control of the political structure.

Nna, in his resignation statement, expressed gratitude to Wike for the opportunity to represent him in the legislative council. However, he decided to align himself with Governor Fubara in an effort to “liberate” the state. This move signifies a shift in political allegiance and is seen as a blow to Wike, who has been embroiled in a power struggle with Fubara over governance and politics in Rivers State.

The majority of the members of the Rivers House of Assembly are loyal to Wike, complicating the political landscape in the state. Efforts to resolve the feud between Wike and Fubara have been made, including a controversial peace deal brokered by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Despite these efforts, the political tensions continue to simmer, with Nna’s support for Fubara adding another layer of complexity to the situation.

Meanwhile, Governor Fubara and Senate President Godswill Akpabio engaged in a heated exchange during a funeral service in Rivers State. Fubara criticized politicians for their aggressive and confrontational tactics, questioning the purpose of the intense struggle for power. In response, Akpabio recounted his own experiences of facing discouragement and urged Fubara to reconsider the value of the ongoing political battles.

The expulsion of Nna, along with the ongoing political tensions in Rivers State, underscores the challenges and complexities of governance and politics in the region. The shifting allegiances and power dynamics between key political players highlight the need for dialogue, cooperation, and restraint to navigate the turbulent political landscape effectively. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the various factions will engage with each other and work towards a resolution that benefits the people of Rivers State.
