The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Executive Council (NEC) has upheld Umar Damagum’s position as the national chairman despite calls for his resignation. Damagum secured his position during the 98th NEC meeting of the party held in Abuja. This decision comes in the wake of threats by 60 House of Representatives members to defect from the party if Damagum did not step down.
The PDP NEC called for unity among its members, urging them to work together for the party’s success and the benefit of Nigerians. The party has been facing internal turmoil following its defeat in the 2023 presidential election. The demand for Damagum’s resignation stems from allegations of anti-party activities, with lawmakers accusing him of aligning with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Debo Ologunagba, the PDP’s national publicity secretary, emphasized the importance of party cohesion and members’ dedication to achieving the party’s goals. The lawmakers who called for Damagum’s resignation cited concerns that he had compromised the party’s integrity by collaborating with the APC.
In response to these accusations, Ugochinyere Ikenga and other representatives reiterated their stance that Damagum’s actions were detrimental to the PDP. They criticized his alleged alignment with the ruling party and expressed concerns that he had undermined the opposition’s stance by selling out for personal gain.
The lawmakers compared Damagum’s actions to those of prominent opposition figures like Bola Tinubu, who remained steadfast in their opposition role and eventually ascended to higher positions of power. They warned that Damagum’s continued leadership could lead to the party’s downfall and stated their intention to defect to other political parties if their demands were not met.
Despite the internal strife within the PDP, the NEC meeting reaffirmed Damagum’s leadership position and called on members to prioritize the party’s success above personal interests. The party’s unity and resilience in the face of challenges remain crucial as it navigates through a period of post-election turbulence.
As the PDP continues to grapple with internal dissent and external pressures, the decision to retain Damagum as the national chairman reflects a commitment to stability and continuity within the party. The NEC’s call for unity and cooperation underscores the importance of collective action in achieving the party’s objectives and serving the interests of the Nigerian people.
