Governors elected under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have called on the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led federal government to step down if it cannot mitigate the economic difficulties facing Nigerians. The opposition governors stated that the ultimate responsibility for addressing Nigeria’s economic challenges lies with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the Chief Executive Officer of the country.
These statements were released in a press release by the director-general of the PDP Governors’ Forum (PDP-GF) Hon CID Maduabum in Abuja. The PDP governors have expressed their concern over the escalating food prices and economic problems that have made it difficult for Nigerians to afford essential items.
Furthermore, the opposition governors, under the leadership of Bauchi state governor, Bala Mohammed, drew a comparison to Venezuela’s situation during the current administration. However, the Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, dismissed this comparison as mischievous and criticized the PDP governors by saying that many of them have not fulfilled their obligations, such as paying minimum wage, gratuities, and pensions.
Despite the criticism, the PDP governors pledged to collaborate with President Tinubu to find solutions to Nigeria’s difficulties. Maduabum pointed out that PDP-governed states have been excelling in terms of developmental policies, programs, and projects. He emphasized that these states regularly pay salaries, pensions, gratuities, and minimum wages to their workers. Maduabum also clarified that any delinquency observed in these areas was not attributed to states governed by the PDP.
Maduabum acknowledged President Tinubu’s efforts in addressing Nigeria’s problems and expressed willingness to work collectively in finding lasting solutions. He also called on the APC-led federal government to fulfill its responsibilities and take necessary actions in addressing the economic hardships facing the country.
In addition, Segun Showunmi, a former PDP gubernatorial candidate in Ogun State, stated that Nigerians should take responsibility for the nation’s current economic challenges. He emphasized that despite being well-informed about the difficulties and suffering under the previous APC-led administration, Nigerians still chose to vote in that direction. He held Nigerians responsible for the country’s challenges and emphasized the need for collective accountability.
The opposition party’s stance highlights its eagerness to collaborate with the ruling party to find tangible solutions to economic challenges while emphasizing the need for collective responsibility. The call for the federal government to step down if it cannot address the economic difficulties demonstrates the urgency to address the pressing issues faced by the Nigerian population. It also reflects the importance of a collaborative effort by all stakeholders to ensure a sustainable and positive outcome for the country’s economic situation.
