The Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions, NASU, is advocating for the prompt payment of its withheld four months salaries arrears. The National President of NASU, Hassan Makolo, emphasized the need for President Bola Tinubu to intervene in ensuring that the salaries are released to maintain industrial harmony within the sector.
During an emergency meeting of NASU branch chairmen and Inter-University Centres in Abuja, Mr. Makolo highlighted the urgency of the situation. He reiterated President Tinubu’s directive to pay the withheld salaries of unions that went on strike during the previous regime. While other union members have received their four months arrears, NASU members are still awaiting their payment despite following due process during the strike.
Mr. Makolo expressed concerns about the delayed payment, stating that it is a form of victimization towards NASU members. He appealed to the government agencies responsible for disbursing the salaries to prioritize NASU members’ payments for the sake of industrial peace and harmony. Additionally, he called on branch chairmen and other members to advocate for their rights and ensure fair treatment for all.
Peters Adeyemi, the General Secretary of NASU, also expressed shock at the disparity in salary payments among different unions. He emphasized the importance of sustaining industrial harmony under President Tinubu’s administration. The delay in paying NASU members’ salaries has raised questions about government priorities and the commitment to honoring agreements with the union.
Mr. Adeyemi disclosed that the Chief of Staff’s office approved the payment of four months salaries to another university union, raising concerns among NASU members. He reiterated that NASU had a clear agreement with the government and should not be subjected to victimization or unfair treatment. Despite the government’s promise to pay the salaries, NASU members are still waiting for their overdue payments.
The meeting was convened to address the issue and urge President Tinubu’s government to expedite the payment of the withheld salaries to NASU members. The union remains committed to peaceful resolution, but warned that if the payments are not made promptly, they may resort to shutting down operations.
In conclusion, NASU is calling on the government to fulfill its commitment and ensure that NASU members receive their long-overdue salaries without any further delay. The union’s members have shown resilience and patience, but their patience is wearing thin. It is essential for the government to prioritize the welfare of NASU members and uphold the agreements made with the union for the sake of maintaining industrial peace and stability in the educational sector.
