The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof Muhammad Ali Pate, recently announced President Ahmed Bola Tinubu’s dedication to improving healthcare accessibility, affordability, and quality for all Nigerians. Speaking at the Ministerial Press Briefing Series in Abuja, Pate highlighted the government’s proactive efforts in this regard, including the recruitment of 2,497 healthcare professionals to address gaps in the workforce, the establishment of 1,400 health facilities, and a significant increase in the Basic Healthcare Fund to N50 billion.
One of the key achievements mentioned by Pate was the increase in the number of women attending antenatal care (ANC) services. With over 550,000 women now accessing their first ANC visit, equipped with vital information and care, the government has been able to improve pregnancy outcomes and reduce maternal and child mortality rates. These achievements are a testament to the progress being made in the healthcare sector under President Tinubu’s leadership.
Pate also emphasized the government’s commitment to expanding health insurance coverage, with an additional 750,000 Nigerians now enrolled in the program. The efforts to improve immunization coverage and strengthen healthcare infrastructure in rural and underserved areas have also contributed to better health outcomes and a reduction in preventable diseases.
In response to the Lassa fever outbreak, comprehensive measures have been implemented, including the distribution of essential response commodities and the development of a robust distribution plan. The successful coverage of HPV vaccination, with over 4.95 million girls vaccinated, represents a significant milestone in preventive healthcare efforts.
The Minister also highlighted achievements in tertiary healthcare services, infrastructure development, and initiatives to address the shortage of healthcare professionals by increasing medical school admissions. Plans to digitize the healthcare system and implement executive orders to regulate drug prices further demonstrate the government’s commitment to creating a robust and accessible healthcare system for all Nigerians.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, discussed the positive economic growth indicators in Nigeria. The country has experienced a 3.46% GDP growth in the fourth quarter of 2023, increased capital importation, and a 50% reduction in petrol importation following the withdrawal of fuel subsidies. The Nigerian Stock Exchange All Share Index crossing the 100,000 mark reflects growing investor confidence in the country’s economy.
Idris also mentioned President Tinubu’s approval of the implementation of the Oronsaye report as a sign of the government’s commitment to fiscal prudence. The merger and scrapping of certain government agencies align with a broader strategy to reform and modernize institutions, promoting efficiency, innovation, and accountability at all levels of governance.
In conclusion, the government’s efforts to improve healthcare access, enhance economic growth, and promote fiscal responsibility reflect a comprehensive approach to addressing the needs of the Nigerian population. With continued investment in healthcare infrastructure, workforce development, and economic reforms, Nigeria is on track to achieving greater prosperity and well-being for all its citizens.
