The leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has raised concerns over the recent appointments made by the FCT minister, Nyesom Wike. They fear that these appointments, particularly of Rivers PDP chieftains, may lead to the APC losing ground in the 2027 elections in the territory. The APC chieftains in the FCT have urged President Tinubu to intervene and caution Wike to avoid further damage to the party’s political standing in the capital.
According to a report by The Punch, the APC leaders in the FCT expressed their dissatisfaction with Wike’s preferential treatment of PDP loyalists over APC members. They believe that Wike’s actions are biased and disregard the contributions of APC members to the party’s success in the region.
The protest against Wike’s appointments took place at a media parley held at the secretariat of the Nigerian Union of Journalists in Abuja. The APC chieftains emphasized the need for President Tinubu to intervene and address the situation before it escalates further.
Wike has faced criticism for his appointments since assuming office, including the appointment of Hon. Chidi Amadi as his Chief of Staff. While Wike aims to enhance the performance of the FCT Administration through these appointments, the APC members, especially FCT indigenes, have been left dissatisfied.
President Tinubu also appointed Felix Amaechi Obuah as the coordinator of the Abuja Metropolitan Management Council, among others, which has further fueled the discontent among APC members in the FCT.
Addressing the media, APC chieftain Abdulwahab Ekekhide criticized the lopsided appointments and warned of potential consequences for the party’s future electoral prospects in the capital. He urged President Tinubu to empower the APC in the FCT or risk facing significant challenges in future elections, including the 2027 area councils election.
In response to rumors about his possible defection to the APC, Wike clarified that he remains a member of the PDP despite disagreements with certain party figures. He emphasized his support for Tinubu in the 2023 presidential election and affirmed his commitment to the opposition party.
Overall, the APC chieftains in the FCT are calling for immediate action to address the disparity in appointments by Wike and ensure that the party’s interests are protected in the territory. President Tinubu’s intervention is seen as crucial in preventing further rifts within the party and preserving its electoral prospects in the upcoming elections.
