The just concluded re-run elections for the Sokoto and Zamfara Houses of Assembly in 2024 have led to the constitution of a tribunal panel. The President of the Court of Appeal, Hon. Justice M.B. Dongban-Mensem, disclosed this through a circular dated 2nd of February, 2024. The circular, which she personally signed, was addressed to the Chief Judge of High Court of Justice, Sokoto State.

The constitution of the Appeal Tribunal is based on Section 285 (b) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) and Paragraph 1 (1,2,3) to the sixth schedule of the Constitution. Additionally, the constitution of the appeal panel complies with Section 130 (3)(a)(b) of the Electoral Act, 2022.

In the circular, the President of the Court of Appeal appealed to the Chief Judge of the High Court of Justice, Sokoto State, to facilitate court halls for the panel members in both respective states. Office accommodation for the official conduct of staff of the panel is also requested.

The constitution of the tribunal panel is a significant step in ensuring that any disputes or issues arising from the re-run elections are handled in a fair and just manner. As such, it is essential to have a formal and organized process in place to address any legal matters that may arise from the elections.

The constitutional basis for the establishment of the tribunal panel is outlined in the circular, providing a clear legal framework for its formation and operation. This ensures that the panel operates within the parameters set out in the Constitution of Nigeria and the Electoral Act.

The President of the Court of Appeal’s personal involvement in the issuance of the circular underscores the importance of this matter. It demonstrates the commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that the electoral process is conducted in an orderly and transparent manner.

The request for court halls and office accommodation for the panel members and staff further emphasizes the need for proper infrastructure and resources to support the tribunal’s work. This is crucial for ensuring that the panel can carry out its functions effectively and efficiently.

In conclusion, the constitution of the tribunal panel for the Sokoto and Zamfara Houses of Assembly re-run elections is an important development in the aftermath of the elections. It reflects a commitment to resolving any legal issues that may arise from the electoral process and upholding the integrity of the democratic system in Nigeria.
