Healthcare workers in Oyo State, who are members of the Nigeria Union of Allied Health Professionals (NUAHP), have initiated a seven-day warning strike due to the government’s failure to address their demands over a two-year period. The Chairman of the association, Olanrewaju Ajani, announced this after the congress held on Monday, highlighting the urgent need for the government to address their 10-point demand.

The demands put forth by the association include the implementation of the new hazard allowance for health professionals, the implementation of a teaching allowance for members involved in training interns and students, and adjusting the CONHESS table for members in Oyo State, similar to what has been done for medical doctors since 2021. Additionally, the association is calling for revamping and adequate funding of state health facilities, releasing promotion letters for qualified members, addressing the skipping of CONHESS 10 for its members, restoring call duty allowance for dental therapists, recruiting more health workers to replace retirees, and fulfilling other demands.

According to Mr. Ajani, the union will not tolerate its members being disregarded in the health sector, and after exhausting all avenues to avoid a trade dispute, they have decided to take this step. He urged Governor Seyi Makinde to promptly address their grievances. As a result, the association has instructed its members to commence a seven-day warning strike, with the possibility of escalating to an indefinite strike if their demands are not met.

The strike will involve various healthcare professionals such as laboratory scientists, physiotherapists, dental technologists, dental therapists, medical social workers, radiographers, nutritionists, dietitians, and health records and information managers across all hospitals in Oyo State. The association is resolute in its stance and aims to bring attention to the critical issues affecting healthcare workers in the state.

Furthermore, the association emphasizes the importance of preserving integrity and credibility in journalism. They acknowledge the financial challenges associated with quality journalism and urge readers to support their noble cause. In conclusion, the healthcare workers in Oyo State are taking a stand to demand fair treatment and better working conditions. Their strike serves as a reminder of the essential role that healthcare professionals play in society and the significance of addressing their needs to maintain a functioning healthcare system. It is crucial for the government to heed their demands and work towards a resolution that benefits both parties.
