The Organised Labour in the health sector is calling on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene in what they see as “recent infractions” at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital Enugu (FNHE), specifically the unlawful suspension of Medical Director, Professor Monday Nwite Igwe.
The unions composing the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU), National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), and Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) jointly addressed an appeal letter dated March 5 to the President. They expressed concern that Professor Igwe was suspended on September 20th of the previous year based on allegations from a civil society organization without proper investigations.
In the appeal letter signed by the unions’ Enugu State chapter Chairmen, they emphasized the need for transparency in reinstating Professor Igwe. They urged President Tinubu to demand a detailed report based on truth and public service rules to clarify the reasons for Igwe’s extended suspension.
The unions highlighted Professor Igwe’s dedication and compassion, stating that he deserves fair treatment and respect rather than unfounded accusations and unfair penalties. They expressed disappointment in the lack of feedback from the Ministry of Health’s investigation team despite their full cooperation.
According to the unions, Professor Igwe’s indefinite suspension was changed to a further suspension on January 26th, with an added three-month extension, without clear justification or establishment of a prima facie case in accordance with public service rules.
The unions viewed the administrative infraction as cynical and were concerned that justice might be denied in this case. They emphasized the importance of upholding fairness, justice, and transparency concerning Professor Igwe, who they described as a beacon of dedication and compassion in their institution.
The unions made a heartfelt appeal to President Tinubu to use his esteemed office to urge the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare to provide a comprehensive report based on truth and adherence to public service rules. They also implored the Ministry to reconsider its decision and afford Professor Igwe the dignified treatment he deserves.
The continued absence of Professor Igwe not only destabilizes the institution but also inflicts undue hardship on his family, as his salary has been halted for several months. The unions called on President Tinubu to swiftly address the matter and restore stability and integrity to the hospital community.
In conclusion, the unions expressed confidence in President Tinubu’s sense of judgment and compassion, believing that his decisive action would uphold the dignity of Professor Igwe and reaffirm their faith in the principles of fairness and justice. They emphasized the need for urgent intervention to rectify the situation and ensure justice for Professor Igwe.
