The All Progressives Congress (APC) National Working Committee has made a decision ahead of the April 20 date to select its candidate for the Ondo State Governorship election. They have settled for a direct primary as the mode of selection. This decision was conveyed to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) by the Alhaji Abdullahi Umar Ganduje-led NWC.

According to the provisions in the APC’s Constitution, the party has three options for choosing candidates for general elections: direct, indirect, and consensus. Deputy National Organising Secretary, Nze Chidi Duru, confirmed the choice of direct primary during a conversation with journalists in Abuja. He stated that the direct primary mode of election will be used for the Ondo State governorship primary election. The National Chairman and National Secretary have also written a letter to INEC informing them of this decision.

In addition to the sitting governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, fifteen other aspirants are vying for the APC ticket for the November governorship elections in Ondo State. Some of the main contenders include Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, Honourable Isaac Kekemeke, and Chief Olusola Oke (SAN).

The decision to use the direct primary mode of election has generated interest and raised expectations among party members and the public. This method of selection allows all registered members of the party to participate in choosing the candidate, rather than a select group of delegates. It is seen as a more transparent and democratic process, as it gives every party member an equal opportunity to have a say in the selection of their candidate.

The choice of primary mode by the APC NWC reflects their commitment to ensuring a fair and effective selection process for the Ondo State governorship candidate. By adopting the direct primary option, the party is signaling its dedication to upholding democratic principles and giving a voice to the grassroots members of the party.

As the date for the primary election approaches, the party is expected to intensify its preparations and mobilization efforts to ensure a smooth and successful process. Party leaders, aspirants, and members will be closely monitoring the developments leading up to the primary election, as the stakes are high for all those involved.

Overall, the decision to use a direct primary for the selection of the Ondo State governorship candidate underscores the APC’s commitment to transparency, fairness, and inclusivity in its internal processes. It sets the stage for a competitive and democratic contest that will ultimately result in the emergence of a strong and credible candidate to represent the party in the upcoming governorship election.
