The All Progressives Congress (APC) Ondo state chapter is currently in the midst of an intense build-up to the primary election. The national spokesperson of APC, Felix Morka, recently made it known that it cannot be ascertained where the governorship ticket will go. This statement has raised doubts for Governor Lucky Aiyedatuwa, who is likely to declare his interest in the governorship seat in Ondo.

Morka emphatically stated the commitment of the APC to democracy, explaining that anyone aspiring for the nomination must go through the process and earn it. He mentioned that the party does not give free gifts and candidates must compete and justify their suitability to the people of the state.

Aiyedatiwa, the former deputy governor of Ondo, officially assumed the role of governor for the South-West state on December 27, 2023, following the unfortunate passing of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu. His completion of Akeredolu’s second term by February 2025 allows him to run for office again, potentially serving as governor for an additional eight years if the electorate favors him.

Political ambition tends to progress, but Aiyedatiwa may be hesitant to express interest in the upcoming 2024 governorship election in Ondo. Speculation arises among keen political observers in Ondo about whether he will actively pursue another term, secure the support of influential figures in Akeredolu’s camp, or graciously step down by February 2025.

In another development, Governor Aiyedatiwa has faced allegations of parading forged academic credentials, as the APC prepared for its governorship primary. The group that made the accusation warned the APC against presenting Aiyedatiwa as its governorship candidate in the forthcoming election, citing evidence that the claim by Governor Aiyedatiwa that he had a diploma from the University of Ibadan in 2001 was false.

The energy around the preparation by different groups for the forthcoming governorship polls indicates the intensity and significance of the events leading to the election. People are keen to see how the situation unfolds and whether Aiyedatiwa will be able to overcome challenges and emerge as a candidate for the primary election. The political landscape in Ondo is certainly filled with tension and uncertainty as the build-up to the primary election continues.
