The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Olalekan Balogun, has sadly passed away at the age of 82. This news was confirmed by his media aide, Dele Ogunsola, on Thursday evening. The traditional ruler died at the University College Hospital in Ibadan shortly after being admitted.
Oba Balogun took the throne on March 11, 2022, following the death of his predecessor, Oba Saliu Adetunji. His family has announced that he will be laid to rest on Friday evening in Ibadan. The late Olubadan, who passed away just 72 hours after completing two years on the throne, will be buried at his Aliiwo ancestral home at 4 p.m. in accordance with Islamic traditions.
In a statement, his younger brother Dr. Kola Balogun revealed that the late Olubadan passed away peacefully at the University College Hospital after a brief illness. He had been indoors on Tuesday due to a mild case of malaria fever, but appeared healthy when receiving guests for his second-anniversary celebrations on Monday.
The late Oba was not only a traditional ruler but also held a Ph.D. degree and had been a university lecturer, a management staff member of Shell British Petroleum, a former gubernatorial candidate, a former Senator, and a successful businessman. His last official duty was presiding over the Olubadan Advisory Council’s meeting on the Saturday before his passing.
Survived by wives, children, and grandchildren, the late Olubadan leaves behind a legacy of service and leadership in Ibadanland. His contributions to the community and his accomplishments in various fields will be remembered by many.
As the Ibadan community mourns the loss of their revered leader, tributes are pouring in from all corners. The late Olubadan’s impact on the region and his dedication to his people will be cherished and honored for years to come.
Through his passing, a chapter in Ibadan’s history comes to a close, but his legacy will continue to inspire future generations to serve their communities selflessly and with dignity. May his soul rest in peace.
