Sunday Olapade, a member of Ikoyi Club, emerged victorious at the Second Custodian Golf Classic held at the Lakowe Lakes Golf Club in Lagos. It was his first win on the Professional Golf Developmental Tour, marking a significant milestone in his career. Olapade exhibited exceptional talent and skill throughout the tournament, clinching the title with a total score of 214, finishing two under par. His remarkable performance earned him the coveted N3 million star prize, which he graciously accepted with gratitude towards his hard work and faith in God.
Reflecting on his triumph, Olapade shared, “It was a tough event, given the quality of the players on the field. I think hard work paid off for me, and I want to thank God for this opportunity to win this event.” His resilience and dedication to the sport were evident in his stellar gameplay, making him a deserving champion at the competition.
The Group Managing Director of Custodian Investment, Wole Oshin, commended Olapade for his outstanding performance and highlighted the event’s role in showcasing and supporting the abundance of talent in the Nigerian professional golf scene. He emphasized the importance of corporate sponsorship and individual contributions in nurturing and promoting emerging golfers, urging more stakeholders to recognize and invest in the potential of these athletes.
Notably, this year’s Custodian Classic saw a significant increase in the prize purse, up to N20 million from the previous N10 million, in response to the growing interest and participation of foreign players. Augustine Manasseh from Ghana led the international contingent, finishing at 222 (+6) and securing a joint fourth-place position alongside George Inalegwu. Meanwhile, Nigeria’s former number one, Kamalu Bako, and Francis Epe, the current PGD Tour leader, claimed second and third place, respectively, in a tightly contested competition.
Femi Olagbenro, the PGD Tour’s Commissioner, expressed optimism about the Tour’s trajectory and commitment to enhancing the overall experience for players and sponsors. He outlined plans to introduce innovative changes, improve venue facilities, and engage new sponsors to elevate the tour’s profile and provide greater value to all stakeholders.
As the golfing community celebrates Sunday Olapade’s triumph at the Second Custodian Golf Classic, the sport continues to attract attention and support, both locally and internationally. The success of such events not only promotes professional golf in Nigeria but also fosters a culture of excellence, sportsmanship, and camaraderie among players and enthusiasts. With dedicated individuals and organizations like Custodian Investment driving growth and development in the sport, the future looks promising for golf in Nigeria and beyond.
