Olayinka Olajide showcased her speed and skill on the track at the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan, clocking the fastest time of 23.42s in her 200m heat on Sunday at the ongoing MTN CHAMPS Season 2. This exceptional performance in Ibadan follows her outstanding display at the African Games in Accra, where she secured a complete set of medals (Gold, Silver, and Bronze), making her the only Track and Field athlete to achieve this feat. Representing D’Victors Athletics Club, Olajide set a new lifetime best of 23.18s in Accra and holds the title of Nigeria’s fastest female athlete in 2024 with a lifetime best of 11.19s set at the MTN CHAMPS/AFN National Trials in Asaba in February.
Following Olajide in the 200m standings in Ibadan is hurdler Stella Ayanleke with a time of 24.87s in her heat, and Ayotomilola Owoeya in 3rd place overall with a time of 25.11s.
MTN CHAMPS Ambassador Enoch Adegoke is on track to clinch his second title of the competition after dominating his heat in 21.23s. Olaolu Olatunde, the 100m Bronze medallist, was the second fastest overall in 21.54s, winning his heat ahead of Jeremiah Nathaniel and Obashola Olaoluwa.
In the Junior (U20) Girls’ 200m heats, Mariam Jegede (25.06s), Ayomide Omotosho (25.16s), and Tunmininu Sanyaolu (25.39s) secured the fastest times.
On the winners’ podium, Stella Ayanleke claimed victory in the women’s 100m Hurdles with a time of 13.80s, bouncing back from her disappointment at the African Games. Gafar Badmus emerged victorious in the Junior Boys’ 400m with a time of 47.50s, followed by Segun Okebadan (49.44s) and Owolabi Timileyin. Enoch Adegoke successfully defended his title in the B Final.
In the Junior Girls’ 400m, Oluwabunmi Israel of Unique Athletics clinched the title in 56.26s, with Damilola Alli of Jaf Athletics (56.91s) and Victoria Bayemule of Osun State completing the podium.
The women’s 400m event saw a 1-2 finish for OAU Spartans, with Monijesu Oyedele taking the Gold and Praise Olukunle settling for the Silver medal.
International School dominated the Youth (U17) category of the Boys’ and Girls’ 800m, with Mohammed Usman winning the Boys’ title ahead of Pelumi Akintayo of Loyola College. In the Girls’ race, Deborah claimed victory over Mufiyat Saheed of Fosla Academy and Balikis Ajao of Oluyoro Girls’ Secondary School.
Cyprian Oyedele, a former National Sports Festival Champion, excelled in the men’s high jump event, leading the way with Yusuf Rasheed Olatunji and Godwin Blessed taking 2nd and 3rd place, respectively. Additionally, Esther Emurieze, Grace Owoniyi, and Oluwasemilore Akinniranye emerged as the top finishers in the Junior Girls shot put event.
Overall, the MTN CHAMPS Season 2 showcased incredible talent and skill in various track and field events, highlighting the dedication and passion of Nigerian athletes in pursuit of excellence.
