Several members and supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abia State, led by the former General Manager of the Abia State Roads Maintenance Agency (ABROMA), Okochi Okali-Oge, have recently made a significant political shift by joining the ruling Labour Party (LP) in the state. This decision was announced in a press statement released in Umuahia, the capital of Abia State.
Okochi Okali-Oge, who was the candidate of the Action Peoples Party (APP) for the Ohafia North constituency seat in Abia State during the 2023 State House of Assembly elections conducted by the Nigeria Electoral Commission, was defeated by the Labour Party candidate who currently represents Ohafia North constituency in the state legislative house. Following his defeat, Okali-Oge made the transition from the APP to the former ruling PDP in Abia State.
In a recent statement, Okochi Okali-Oge cited the lack of internal democracy within the state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party as the main reason for his decision to switch political allegiance. He praised the serious commitment and diligence shown by Governor Alex Otti and highlighted the substantial progress made by the current administration in the state’s infrastructural development as reasons for joining the Labour Party.
Expressing his support for the Labour Party, Okochi Okali-Oge stated, “I have witnessed firsthand a government that upholds its promises to the people under the Labour Party, and I have chosen to align with them in advancing the progress of our state.” He also expressed his willingness to contribute to the development of Abia State by offering his expertise and experience gained over the years in engineering.
This move by Okochi Okali-Oge and other PDP members and supporters signifies a shifting political landscape in Abia State, as individuals make strategic decisions based on their assessment of the current political climate and governance in the state. The decision to join the Labour Party reflects a desire for change and a belief in the leadership and vision of Governor Alex Otti and his administration.
The transition of Okochi Okali-Oge and his supporters to the Labour Party could have implications for the political dynamics in Abia State, as it may strengthen the ruling party’s position and influence in the region. It also highlights the importance of internal party democracy and the need for political parties to address the concerns of their members in order to maintain a strong support base.
Overall, the decision of Okochi Okali-Oge and others to join the Labour Party underscores the evolving political landscape in Abia State and the importance of leadership, governance, and party dynamics in shaping the political environment. It remains to be seen how this shift will impact the upcoming political developments in the state and whether it will lead to further changes in the political landscape.
