The Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council has issued a statement to provide clarity on the expenses released to the public, specifically regarding the party’s legal expenditure. The party clarified that the sum of N744,500,000.00 represents a general legal amount paid to lawyers, which includes various expenses related to legal matters.
According to the statement signed by Dr. Yunusa Tanko, the Chief Spokesperson of the Obi-Datti Campaign Committee, the party emphasized that the legal fee paid to its lawyers is a personal matter. Additionally, the party explained that the compound expenses on legal matters cannot be attributed to one specific sector. The sum also encompasses expenses related to research, accommodations, transportation, local and international flights, as well as stationery for various documents.
The statement further elaborated that the legal expenditure covers a wide range of activities, including filing of cases before elections, handling matters involving the party’s candidate, transmitting and photocopying of legal documents, bringing experts from overseas during post-election legal battles, and their accommodation. Furthermore, the funding of lawyers sent to states to collect electoral materials from INEC State offices and financial assistance to party candidates facing legal issues are also included in the legal expenses.
The party expressed its commitment to transparency and accountability, stating, “As a body determined to inject sanity into our polity, we will continue in the right direction in ensuring that we transparently account for these funds.” The statement acknowledged the contributions of individuals and the legal team at the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal, emphasizing their hard work and sacrifices, despite the outcome of the election petitions.
The party also used the opportunity to reassure Nigerians, especially the youth, that a New Nigeria is possible, and urged everyone to remain committed to the journey for a better future, despite the present challenges faced.
In conclusion, the Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council sought to provide clarification on the expenses related to its legal expenditure. The statement aimed to align the party’s position with the public and reinforce its commitment to transparency and accountability, while also acknowledging the hard work of its legal team and reaffirming its vision for a better Nigeria.
