Pelumi Nubi, a 28-year-old solo driver from London to Lagos, recently completed a historic journey that took her 68 days to accomplish. Starting on 31 January from London, United Kingdom, she traversed 16 different countries across Europe and Africa before reaching Nigeria through the Republic of Benin. Her journey culminated in a warm welcome reception held at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), where she was honored by various dignitaries including the institution’s Vice-Chancellor, Folasade Ogunsola, the Chairman of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, and Nigerian traveler Newton Jibunoh.
Ms. Nubi’s journey to UNILAG after being welcomed at the Nigeria-Benin Republic border included a cultural display organized by the university’s Entrepreneurship and Skills Development Centre. Despite encountering challenges such as a car accident in Ivory Coast, a 24-hour hold at the Liberian border, and being denied entry into Sierra Leone, she persevered and adjusted her return date from 23 March to 7 April.
Reflecting on her challenges, Ms. Nubi highlighted the varying road conditions she faced, particularly in Liberia and Guinea. She emphasized the importance of self-care, especially as a woman, during the journey. Despite facing adversities like eye issues in Morocco and an accident in Ivory Coast, she prioritized her health above all else.
When questioned about her future plans post the London-Lagos solo drive, Ms. Nubi expressed her passion for travel and her desire to inspire others, particularly women, to step out of their comfort zones and achieve their goals. Having traveled to over 80 countries, she intends to continue exploring and inspiring the younger generation while advocating for policy changes to facilitate easier travel within Africa.
During her welcome address, the UNILAG Vice-Chancellor praised Ms. Nubi’s indomitable spirit and encouraged youth to emulate her resilience. Abike Dabiri-Erewa commended Ms. Nubi for her self-reliance and accomplishment in overcoming challenges during her journey. Newton Jibunoh shared his experiences as a seasoned traveler and handed over the exploration mantle to Ms. Nubi, applauding her unprecedented feat as the first woman to drive from London to Nigeria.
The event also saw the Lagos State Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mobolaji Ogunlende, appreciating Ms. Nubi for setting an example for the youth and breaking barriers. The dignitaries present honored her achievements and encouraged her to continue exploring and inspiring others. Ms. Nubi’s journey exemplifies courage, determination, and the spirit of adventure, inspiring individuals to overcome obstacles and pursue their dreams.
Overall, Pelumi Nubi’s solo drive from London to Lagos stands as a remarkable achievement, symbolizing resilience, determination, and the power of pushing boundaries to accomplish extraordinary feats. Her journey serves as a testament to the endless possibilities that await those who dare to dream and embark on uncharted paths.
