The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) is set to hold its 13th Convocation ceremony where a total of 22,175 students will graduate. This includes 15,768 undergraduates from various departments in the eight faculties of the university, 6,407 postgraduate students, and six PhD graduands. Additionally, the university will confer honorary doctorate degrees on two distinguished Nigerians, Dr. Innocent Chukwuma and Hafsatu Abdulwaheed.

Dr. Innocent Chukwuma, the founder of Innoson Motors, a prominent automobile company in Nigeria, will be awarded an honorary doctorate degree in Business Administration. This recognition is a result of his creativity, innovation, and dedication to local content. On the other hand, Hafsatu Abdulwaheed, the first female novelist in northern Nigeria, activist, and philanthropist, will receive an honorary degree of Doctor of Letters, honoris causa for her contributions to education, especially for girls.

The Vice-Chancellor of NOUN, Prof. Olufemi A. Peters, announced these honours at a press briefing in Abuja. He emphasized that both recipients embody the core values of the university including entrepreneurial ingenuity, knowledge-based content, and creativity. The decision to award honorary degrees was carefully considered, as it is not a common practice at NOUN.

The Convocation ceremony will also feature the investiture of the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, as the new Chancellor of the university. Additionally, the Vice-Chancellor of the Open University of Tanzania, Professor Elifas Bisanda, will deliver the Convocation Lecture. These events are expected to further enrich the academic and cultural experience of the university community.

Mr. Peters highlighted the significance of these recognitions and how they pave the way for valuable knowledge-based partnerships. He also underscored the impact of education in transforming communities and breaking the cycle of poverty, a cause that both honorees are deeply committed to.

The university community is eagerly anticipating the graduation ceremony, where students will be celebrated for their hard work and achievements. The event will not only mark a milestone for the graduating students but also serve as a testament to the university’s commitment to excellence and recognizing individuals who have made significant contributions to society.

In conclusion, the NOUN’s 13th Convocation ceremony promises to be a memorable and inspiring event, celebrating the accomplishments of its graduates and honoring individuals who have made a lasting impact on their communities. It is a time to reflect on the value of education, innovation, and creativity, and to celebrate the diversity and talent within the university community.
