The National Open University of Nigeria, NOUN, recently announced the postponement of the Investiture of the Oba of Benin, His Majesty Oba Ewuare II, as its new Chancellor to the following Saturday. Originally scheduled to take place on Thursday, 11th April, 2024, as part of the institution’s 13th Convocation Ceremony, the Investiture ceremony had to be rescheduled due to the public holiday for the Eid el-Fitr festival.
In a statement signed by the Registrar of the University, Oladipo A. Ajayi, it was explained that the decision to postpone was necessary because Thursday was designated as a public holiday for the Eid celebration. The Federal Government had earlier declared Tuesday and Wednesday of that week as public holidays for the Muslim festival, but the circumstance of the Ramadan moon-sighting extended the festival by an additional day.
As a result, the Investiture of the Chancellor has now been rescheduled to take place on Saturday morning, coinciding with the day of the Convocation Ceremony. Mr. Ajayi expressed regret for any inconvenience the postponement may have caused, emphasizing that the situation was unforeseen.
The Investiture ceremony is expected to be a significant event in the university’s calendar, as it marks the official appointment of Oba Ewuare II as the new Chancellor of NOUN. This prestigious role reflects the university’s commitment to diversity and inclusivity, as it appoints prominent figures from various backgrounds to serve in leadership positions.
The Oba of Benin, being a respected traditional ruler in Nigeria, brings a wealth of experience and wisdom to the role of Chancellor. His appointment is seen as a testament to the strong relationship between the university and traditional institutions in the country. The Investiture ceremony will not only be a formal induction of Oba Ewuare II as Chancellor but also a celebration of the rich cultural heritage of Nigeria.
In addition to the Investiture ceremony, the 13th Convocation Ceremony of NOUN is expected to be a momentous occasion for students, staff, and stakeholders of the university. It is an opportunity to celebrate the academic achievements of graduates and the contributions of faculty members to the institution’s success. The rescheduling of the Investiture to the following Saturday is a minor adjustment in the grand scheme of things, and it is a testament to the university’s adaptability and commitment to ensuring a successful event for all involved.
As the university prepares for the Investiture of the Oba of Benin as its Chancellor, it reinforces its dedication to excellence and diversity in higher education. The new date for the ceremony provides an opportunity for more people to participate and witness this historic event. The NOUN community looks forward to welcoming Oba Ewuare II as its new Chancellor and celebrating this milestone in its history.
