The Nigeria Olympic Committee Women’s Commission (NOCWC) organized a 5km walk on Saturday to commemorate International Women’s Day. The event, which took place at the NOC Secretariat inside the National Stadium, Surulere, saw the participation of women from diverse backgrounds. In addition to the walk, the event also offered free medical check-ups and health talks for the women involved.
Ms. Tayo Popoola, a member of NOCWC, highlighted the importance of the event and the significance of women celebrating each other. She expressed, “We’re celebrating International Women’s Day, a global event. The NOC Women’s Commission believes that our women deserve recognition. The Nigeria Olympic Committee is proud to be a part of the global celebration, acknowledging March as the dedicated month for women’s accomplishments.”
Olabisi Joseph, the fourth Vice President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee, stressed the importance of celebrating women and promoting inclusivity. She stated, “Our theme is ‘Celebrating Women and Inclusion, Inspiring Inclusion,’ where we honor women for their past and present achievements, their contributions to breaking barriers and stereotypes.” Joseph also underscored the health aspect of the event, emphasizing the role of physical activity in improving overall health. She mentioned, “Physical activity enhances health, and a strong woman contributes to a strong nation. It is essential for women to engage in sports, fitness walks, and prioritize their health, as healthy women are crucial for healthy families, communities, and national development.”
The event saw a successful turnout, with Ms. Joseph expressing satisfaction with the results. She anticipated an even larger turnout at future events by raising awareness about similar initiatives planned for Abuja and Calabar. These events will feature fitness walks, health talks, and medical check-ups across various locations in Nigeria, aiming for a strong nationwide response and building on the success witnessed in Lagos.
Amelia Edet, an 80-year-old former head coach of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), encouraged all present to adopt a healthy lifestyle and incorporate regular exercise into their routines. Obasanmi Olajumoke, a bronze medalist in Badminton for Nigeria at the African Games in Ghana, was among the participants at the event.
The NOCWC’s 5km walk for International Women’s Day not only celebrated the achievements and contributions of women but also emphasized the importance of health and fitness in women’s lives. By organizing such events, the commission seeks to promote women’s health, empowerment, and inclusivity, contributing to the overall well-being and development of women in Nigeria. With plans for future events in other locations, the NOCWC aims to continue its efforts to inspire and empower women across the country.
