The national secretary of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Oladipupo Olayokun, has responded to reports of a political coalition being formed in Nigeria to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Parties like the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the NNPP, and the Labour Party (LP) have been mentioned in this purported coalition. Olayokun has dismissed these reports as false, stating that the party has not authorized any coalition with other political platforms.
Olayokun explained that the opposition parties did come together after the 2023 election, but this was due to disputes in the governorship election, not for the purpose of the 2027 general elections. He clarified that there were stories in the newspapers about several political parties forming a coalition, but it was not related to the 2027 elections. He also mentioned that the only coalition formed by the NNPP was a result of a grand design by the ruling party to seize some states they lost through the ballot box through the court. This led the opposition parties to unite after the tribunal and Court of Appeal judgments.
Kwankwaso (NNPP), Peter Obi (LP), and Atiku Abubakar (PDP) are currently viewed as the most influential opposition leaders in Nigeria. In addition, there have been conversations among opposition leaders about plans to form a mega party to challenge the APC in the 2027 general election, as disclosed by Professor Pat Utomi, a key associate of Obi.
In conclusion, Olayokun emphasized that the NNPP has not participated in any coalition discussions for the 2027 elections. These responses provide clarity on the current political landscape in Nigeria and the position of the NNPP in relation to political alliances.
