The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), under the leadership of Dr. Boniface Aniebonam, has announced its intention to participate in the upcoming governorship elections in Ondo and Edo States. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has scheduled the off-cycle governorship elections in Edo State for Sept. 22 and in Ondo State for Nov. 16 of this year. In preparation for the elections, INEC released the list of 17 political parties and their candidates for the Edo governorship election on March 31.
Similarly, on March 30, INEC reported that 19 political parties, including the NNPP, had shown interest in contesting in the Ondo State governorship election. Despite internal wranglings within the NNPP, Dr. Aniebonam expressed confidence that the party would overcome the crisis and actively participate in the upcoming elections. He attributed the internal conflicts to certain leaders within the party.
Dr. Aniebonam emphasized that NNPP has a history of active participation in elections across the country since its founding in 2001, which prevented the party from being deregistered by INEC. He criticized some party leaders for attempting to take over the party, which he believes undermines the years of hard work put into building NNPP.
Addressing the purported national convention of the party that took place in Abuja on April 6, Dr. Aniebonam clarified that the convention proceeded despite a lawsuit at the Federal High Court, Abuja, trying to halt it. He revealed that individuals who claimed leadership at the convention had been expelled from the party due to anti-party activities. He reaffirmed the real leadership’s commitment to resolving internal issues and focusing on the growth and progress of the NNPP.
Dr. Aniebonam urged all NNPP members to prioritize the peace and advancement of the party over personal agendas or power struggles. He dismissed the notion of dirty politics and emphasized that the NNPP’s primary goal is to strengthen the party rather than engage in malicious tactics against other political entities.
In conclusion, Dr. Aniebonam assured that all internal challenges within NNPP would be resolved amicably, paving the way for the party’s active participation in the upcoming governorship elections in Edo and Ondo States. Despite the hurdles faced, the NNPP remains committed to its core values and aims to contribute positively to the political landscape of Nigeria.
