The Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR) in Yaba, Lagos State, Professor Babatunde Salako, emphasized the importance of mental health awareness among Nigerians, especially in dealing with life events, stress, and emotional disturbances. He called for more individuals to become advocates for mental health, so that those struggling with emotional issues can seek help when needed.
Speaking at the fourth Jemila Abubakar Essay Competition Award ceremony of the Asido Foundation, held at the International Conference Centre of the University of Ibadan, Professor Salako highlighted that mental health goes beyond physical sickness, as it can also manifest in psychological and psychotic-related issues if not addressed early. He emphasized the need for increased awareness and advocacy to prevent mental health issues from escalating to a point where they become severe.
The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Professor Kayode Adebowale, represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Professor Aderonke Baiyeroju, mentioned the establishment of a student mental health committee at the university. This committee is tasked with developing a mental health policy and implementation plan to address the mental health needs of students and promote their overall well-being.
Former lawmaker, Mr Seyi Adisa, stressed the importance of collective action in addressing mental health issues and commended the Asido Foundation for organizing the annual Jemila Abubakar Essay Competition to raise awareness and build advocates for mental health. He highlighted the need for increased advocacy and awareness, especially in workplaces where ignorance about mental health is prevalent.
Founder of the Asido Foundation, Dr Jibril Abdulmalik, explained that the annual essay competition among undergraduates in Nigerian universities aims to honor the memory of their first program manager, Jemila Abubakar, by inspiring young people to promote mental health awareness across the country. The top 15 winners of the competition will undergo further training to become mental health champions themselves.
During the event, several dignitaries were appointed as speech ambassadors, patrons, and ambassadors for the foundation and mental health advocacy, including Dr Zahra Parker, Dr Chinonso Egemba, Alhaji Lanre Adisa, Professor Nike Grange, Professor Olutoyin Ogunkunle, and Dr Ibrahim Olaifa, among others.
Overall, the focus on mental health awareness and advocacy at the event underscored the importance of addressing mental health issues in Nigeria and promoting overall well-being among individuals, especially the youth.
