The Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NiMet, has released its 2024 Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP) documents, forecasting a delayed onset of the rains in some parts of the country and early onset in others. According to the predictions presented by Mr. Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, the normal onset of the rains is expected in the northern states, while Borno and Abia states are predicted to have an early onset compared to their long-term averages.
The SCP also anticipates an early end of the rainy season in parts of Yobe, Jigawa, Sokoto, Kebbi, Kano, Kaduna, Plateau, Nasarawa, Taraba, Gombe, Bauchi, Cross River, Ebonyi, Ogun, and Lagos states. However, a late end of the season is forecasted for the southern states of Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Ondo, Ekiti, and parts of Edo, Delta, Ogun, Oyo, Kogi, Kwara, FCT, Niger, and Kaduna.
Additionally, NiMet predicts that the annual rainfall amount will be below normal in certain states, including Yobe, Jigawa, Bauchi, Kano, Kebbi, Gombe, Plateau, Taraba, Nasarawa, Benue, Enugu, Ebonyi, Cross River, Delta, and Bayelsa. However, other parts of the country are expected to observe normal to above-normal annual rainfall amounts.
The agency also forecasts that most parts of the country could experience a shorter length of the rainy season, while Bayelsa, Rivers, and Akwa-Ibom are likely to experience a longer season compared to their mean. Normal to shorter length of the season is anticipated in other parts of the country as well.
In addition to the rainfall predictions, the SCP 2024 document contains detailed forecasts for temperatures in the first five months of the year, as well as predictions for dry spells, little dry seasons, and the prevalence of Malaria and Meningitis. These predictions come with explicit details, especially focusing on the socio-economic implications associated with each projection.
The 2024 Seasonal Climate Prediction by NiMet points to the potential challenges and opportunities that the anticipated weather patterns may bring to different regions of the country. It provides valuable insights for various sectors, including agriculture, water resource management, and public health planning.
As the Nigerian public prepares for the upcoming rainy season, the SCP offers a valuable resource for individuals, communities, and policymakers to make informed decisions and take proactive measures to mitigate the potential impact of the projected weather patterns. This comprehensive assessment by NiMet serves as a critical tool for climate resilience and adaptation efforts across the country, highlighting the importance of proactive planning and preparedness for addressing climate variability and extreme weather events.
