The Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Adamu Aliyu, expressed his views on Nigeria’s economic challenges during a meeting at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja. He emphasized that corruption plays a significant role in the country’s current state of affairs, leading to hardships for its citizens.

Aliyu, represented by the commission’s secretary, Clifford Oparaodu, highlighted the impact of corrupt practices on various aspects of governance, including project implementation and policy adherence. He pointed out that when policies are not followed diligently, corruption tends to thrive, ultimately affecting the overall economic well-being of the nation.

During the meeting, Aliyu commended the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID) for its efforts in promoting civic engagement and public awareness. He stressed the importance of educating citizens about their rights and responsibilities, especially in monitoring government policies and ensuring the efficient delivery of public projects.

The ICPC chairman expressed the commission’s commitment to supporting the CJID’s initiatives and encouraged civil society organizations to leverage the Freedom of Information Act to access relevant government information. He also urged them to take legal action when government agencies withhold crucial details.

Dapo Olorunyomi, CEO of CJID, reciprocated the ICPC’s support and highlighted the collaborative efforts between both organizations in promoting accountability and combating corruption. He specifically mentioned the UDEME project, which focuses on social accountability and good governance practices.

Olorunyomi proposed further collaboration in areas such as staff training, media coverage, and information sharing to enhance the ICPC’s investigative capabilities. He also requested the commission’s assistance in investigating cases of wrongdoing and prosecuting offenders to uphold the rule of law.

The partnership between the ICPC and CJID aims to strengthen institutional frameworks for transparency and integrity within Nigeria’s governance structures. By fostering dialogue, collaboration, and mutual support, both organizations strive to promote ethical standards and combat corruption effectively.

In conclusion, the meeting underscored the shared commitment of the ICPC and CJID to uphold democratic values, transparency, and accountability in Nigeria. Through their collaborative efforts, they seek to create a system that fosters public trust, responsible governance, and sustainable economic development.
