The Nigerian government has expressed its commitment to providing the necessary resources for expanding seismic monitoring equipment throughout the country. This initiative aims to enhance the nation’s readiness to mitigate the impact of natural disasters. The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, reiterated this commitment during the commissioning of the Nigeria Geological Survey Agency (NGSA) National Seismic Monitoring Station-5 in Katampe, Abuja.

Mr. Alake praised the agency for establishing the fifth monitoring station and assured that the federal government is prepared to allocate resources for expanding facilities across the country. He emphasized the unpredictability of nature and the importance of estimating when natural disasters might occur to enable contingency arrangements to mitigate their adverse effects on the population.

The collaboration between NGSA and the University of Abuja resulted in the establishment of the new seismic monitoring station in Katampe. This initiative underscores the current administration’s dedication to safeguarding lives, properties, and ensuring the well-being of citizens. The Director-General of NGSA, Abdulrasak Garba, highlighted that the equipment at the Katampe station can detect movements and levels of tremors, enabling the agency to alert disaster management agencies about potential earth tremors or earthquakes in Abuja and other parts of the country.

While Nigeria is not typically prone to earthquakes, recent tremors in various regions indicate the potential for seismic activity. Areas like Mpape, Maitama in Abuja, parts of Kwara, Kaduna, and Saki in Oyo state have experienced low seismicity. Therefore, establishing a network of active seismic monitoring stations is crucial for enhancing the nation’s preparedness to manage impending disasters.

NGSA, an agency under the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development, is tasked with providing updated geological data essential for the development of the mining industry and the nation’s economy. The agency’s efforts in expanding seismic monitoring facilities align with the government’s goal of ensuring comprehensive disaster preparedness and response mechanisms.

In conclusion, the commitment of the Nigerian government to investing in seismic monitoring equipment reflects a proactive approach to disaster risk reduction. By enhancing the nation’s capacity to detect and respond to seismic activities, the government aims to protect lives, properties, and mitigate the impact of natural disasters. The collaboration between NGSA and other institutions underscores the importance of collective efforts in strengthening disaster management strategies for the welfare of all citizens.
