The Federal Government of Nigeria has assured its commitment to supporting the training of personnel in teaching hospitals and tertiary health institutions to tackle emerging challenges in healthcare delivery. This pledge was made by Vice President Kashim Shettima during a meeting with a delegation from the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) at the presidential villa. The Vice President emphasized that improving healthcare delivery is a key priority in President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Vice President Kashim Shettima praised the leadership of UMTH for the significant progress made in recent years, highlighting the administration’s support for human capacity development in hospitals across the country. He also mentioned the government’s intention to seek partnerships with the private sector to further enhance healthcare training in these institutions.
The delegation from UMTH, led by the Chief Medical Director, Ahmed Ahidjo, included key members of the hospital’s management team. They expressed their gratitude to the Vice President for his continuous support over the years and presented the hospital’s achievements and future plans. The transformation of UMTH from a 600-bed to a 1305-bed facility with advanced medical equipment was highlighted, along with the recruitment of over 100 professors specializing in various medical fields.
Vice President Shettima stressed the importance of training and affirmed the administration’s commitment to exploring all available avenues to support UMTH and other similar institutions. He praised the proactive leadership of the hospital’s CMD and the significant improvements in staff morale, capacity building, and infrastructure development.
Ahmed Ahidjo, in his remarks, requested additional government support to help UMTH achieve its goal of becoming an international center of excellence in healthcare delivery. He outlined plans for the construction of an electronic health institute to facilitate the hospital’s digitalization project and enhance training capabilities.
The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Pate, also emphasized the government’s focus on building a resilient, equitable, and quality health system. He highlighted key priority areas such as strengthening health sector governance, implementing effective regulations, digitalization, enhancing citizen engagement, and ensuring inclusivity in healthcare services.
