The Federal Government of Nigeria successfully evacuated 138 irregular Nigerian migrants who were stranded in Libya back to the country on Tuesday. The evacuation was carried out under the directives of the Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs as part of the 4D foreign policy of the administration.
Amb. Kabiru Musa, Chargé D’Affaires En Titre of the Nigerian Mission in Libya, announced the successful repatriation of the Nigerian evacuees. The group, consisting of 77 males, 56 females, 11 children, and four infants, departed from the Mitiga International Airport in Tripoli aboard chartered flight UZ 189 and were expected to arrive at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos later the same day.
This marks the fourth evacuation exercise conducted by the Nigerian Mission in Libya in 2024. Nearly one thousand stranded Nigerians have been safely repatriated back to Nigeria so far this year. The evacuations were carried out in collaboration with the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) in Libya as part of its Voluntary Humanitarian Repatriation (VHR) programme.
The Nigerian authorities, with the support of the Libyan government, also facilitated the release and repatriation of Nigerians held in detention facilities for immigration-related offences. The statement from Amb. Kabiru Musa emphasized the government’s commitment to providing necessary consular assistance to Nigerians in Libya and ensuring their safe return home.
Amb. Kabiru Musa issued a cautionary message to young Nigerians, urging them to refrain from irregular migration. He emphasized the dangers and risks involved in such journeys, highlighting the fact that many individuals may not achieve their dreams and could even lose their lives in the pursuit of greener pastures.
Upon their arrival in Nigeria, the evacuees would be received by relevant government agencies responsible for their rehabilitation and reintegration into society. The statement concluded with a reminder of the government’s ongoing efforts to assist and protect Nigerians abroad, particularly those in distress or facing challenging situations.
In conclusion, the successful evacuation of 138 Nigerian migrants stranded in Libya reflects the government’s commitment to protecting its citizens abroad and providing necessary support for their safe return and reintegration into society.
