The federal government has announced Thursday, April 11, as an additional public holiday to commemorate this year’s Eid-el-Fitr. The statement was released by Aishetu Ndayako, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, on Tuesday in Abuja. The approval was granted by Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the federal government, to congratulate Muslims on the successful completion of the Holy month of Ramadan.

Ramadan is described as a month of spiritual rejuvenation, and the minister emphasized President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to ensuring a safe and prosperous Nigeria for all citizens to thrive. Initially, the federal government had declared Tuesday and Wednesday as public holidays to observe this year’s Eid el-Fitr celebration.

Eid el Fitr, also known as the holiday of breaking the fast, is celebrated by Muslims globally to mark the end of the month-long dawn-to-sunset fasting period of Ramadan.

In the spirit of celebrating and respecting this significant religious holiday, the federal government has extended its support by recognizing an additional public holiday to allow citizens to observe and celebrate in peace and unity.

As Muslims across the country prepare to celebrate Eid el-Fitr, it is essential for all to respect and appreciate the diverse cultural and religious practices that contribute to the richness of Nigeria’s societal fabric. The federal government’s decision to declare an additional public holiday reflects its commitment to promoting inclusivity and understanding among all citizens.

The holiday is an opportunity for families and communities to come together, share meals, exchange gifts, and engage in prayers and reflection. It signifies a time of renewal and spiritual growth for Muslims, as they conclude a month of fasting, prayer, and charitable acts.

The federal government’s gesture of granting an additional public holiday for Eid el-Fitr demonstrates its support for religious diversity and cultural harmony in Nigeria. It encourages unity and mutual respect among citizens of different faiths and backgrounds, fostering a sense of belonging and shared values.

The significance of Eid el-Fitr extends beyond religious observance to encompass a spirit of compassion, generosity, and solidarity. It is a time to reaffirm bonds of friendship and love, strengthen community ties, and promote peace and understanding among all Nigerians.

In conclusion, the federal government’s decision to declare an additional public holiday for Eid el-Fitr reflects its commitment to promoting religious tolerance, cultural diversity, and social harmony in Nigeria. As citizens unite to celebrate this special occasion, let us embrace the values of compassion, unity, and peace that define the spirit of Eid el-Fitr.
