President Bola Tinubu has recently approved the upgrade of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Birnin Kebbi to a teaching hospital for the College of Health Sciences at the Federal University Birnin Kebbi (FUBK). This decision was conveyed in a letter dated 13th March, signed by the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Tunji Alausa, and addressed to the Vice Chancellor of FUBK, Professor Muhammad Umar.
The purpose of this upgrade is to enhance healthcare services and increase the availability of Human Resources for Health in Nigeria. The Minister of Health mandated the university to collaborate with the management of the Federal Medical Centre, now known as the Federal University Teaching Hospital, Birnin Kebbi, to improve their facilities for teaching and research activities.
In response, the Vice Chancellor expressed his excitement about this development and assured that the university would make full use of the opportunities that come with this upgrade. To facilitate the implementation of this upgrade, a committee has been set up, led by Professor Bello Shehu of the Federal University of Health Sciences, Katsina State, and co-chaired by Professor Aliyu Turaki, the Deputy Vice Chancellor of FUBK.
This recent decision by President Bola Tinubu is part of a series of steps taken to enhance healthcare infrastructure across the country. It includes the upgrade of cancer treatment facilities in all six geopolitical zones and the implementation of ten critical healthcare service expansion projects in various specialized areas in hospitals nationwide.
Established in 2013, FUBK is one of the federal universities established at the same time as the ones in Gashia, Yobe State, and Gusau, Zamfara State. The upgrade of FMC Birnin Kebbi to a teaching hospital is seen as a significant milestone in the development of healthcare education and services in the region.
In conclusion, this upgrade aligns with the government’s commitment to improving healthcare delivery and education in Nigeria. It is a step towards providing better quality healthcare services to the citizens and enhancing the training of healthcare professionals. The collaborative efforts between the university and the teaching hospital are expected to yield positive outcomes in terms of healthcare provision and research advancements.
