The Nigerian Society of Neurological Sciences (NSNS) has highlighted the significant burden of neurological diseases in Nigeria and other sub-Saharan African countries. These diseases account for about a fifth of the world’s global burden of diseases, indicating a pressing public health issue in the region. NSNS emphasized that stigma in neuro-disability poses a barrier to quality healthcare access, particularly in mental health and epilepsy.
In a communiqué issued at the end of the association’s 56th annual scientific conference and general meeting in Abuja, NSNS stressed the importance of implementing the Mental Health Law of 2022 and the Mental Health Policy to address the stigma associated with neuro-disability. The organization called for mental health to be integrated into all levels of healthcare in Nigeria and advocated for syndicated multisectorial collaborations to raise awareness about stigma in neuro-disability.
NSNS also encouraged Nigerian neuroscientists to explore alternative medical practices for holistic care of neurological disorders. The association emphasized the need for more research and networking in the field of headache study, as it is a common symptom of neurological diseases but has been understudied in Nigeria. Additionally, NSNS highlighted the limited availability of comprehensive care for aneurysms in Nigeria due to the scarcity of experienced specialists and diagnostic and treatment equipment.
Managing neurological disorders requires a holistic approach to ensure the well-being and social integration of patients. NSNS called for improved funding for health and increased budgetary allocation to address neurological disorders in Nigeria. The association recommended the establishment of neurovascular centers across the country to provide comprehensive care for aneurysms of brain arteries, emphasizing the importance of expertise and facilities for non-invasive management of cerebral aneurysms.
In conclusion, NSNS underscored the urgent need for proper care and resources to address the burden of neurological diseases in Nigeria and other sub-Saharan African countries. By promoting awareness, advocating for policy implementation, and fostering collaborations, the association aims to improve access to quality healthcare for individuals with neuro-disability. It is essential for the government and healthcare sector to prioritize neurological disorders and invest in specialized facilities and expertise to enhance the management and treatment of these conditions.
