President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has made a significant decision in appointing Engr. Umar Abdullahi Umar to a top position in his government. Umar, who is the son of the APC national chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, has been appointed as the executive director, technical services of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA). This decision follows the suspension of Ahmad Salihijo Ahmad, the managing director/CEO of the REA, due to an alleged N1.2 billion fraud.

Engr. Umar Abdullahi Umar comes from a political background, being the son of the former governor of Kano state and the national chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). His appointment to the REA management team by President Tinubu highlights his involvement in the 2023 elections and the role he played in the campaign.

Tinubu also appointed three other individuals to key positions within the REA. Aliyu Abubakar was named as the replacement for Salihijo, while Ayoade Gboyega was appointed as the executive director, corporate services, and Doris Uboh as the executive director of the Rural Electrification Fund (REF).

Engr. Umar Abdullahi Umar’s active participation in the 2023 elections, particularly in the Tinubu/Shettima campaign, showcases his dedication to political involvement and youth empowerment. His appointment to the REA reflects Tinubu’s recognition of his capabilities and contributions.

In a separate development, Abdullahi Ganduje, the former governor of Kano state, received a favorable verdict in the dollar bribery scandal case. The Federal High Court in Kano ruled that the state’s anti-corruption and public complaints commission did not have jurisdiction to investigate Ganduje, as the allegation against him falls under the federal offense category.

Justice Abdullahi Liman’s judgment stated that the attorney-general of the federation and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have the authority to handle such cases. The decision was met with mixed reactions, with Usman Fari, the counsel to the anti-graft agency, expressing intentions to challenge the court’s ruling at the Court of Appeal.

Overall, President Tinubu’s appointment of Engr. Umar Abdullahi Umar to a key position in the REA underscores his commitment to effective governance and the utilization of capable individuals in key roles. The political landscape continues to evolve, with key figures like Ganduje and Umar playing pivotal roles in shaping the country’s future.
