The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency, NESREA, recently took action against non-compliant facilities in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) by sealing 13 facilities for environmental offenses. These facilities included Veritas Plastics, Almat Farms, Dayak Nigeria Limited, FIK Contracting Limited, Salis Ventilated Homes Ltd, Peachville Estate, Net Construction Nigeria Limited, Sazak Acre Bilogue, Coppa D’alberto Ltd, Efab Properties Ltd, Phinada Mill, and Skippers Electronics.
During a briefing with the media in Abuja, the director-general of NESREA, Aliyu Jauro, explained that the closures were a result of various environmental crimes committed by the facilities. He emphasized that due process was followed in sealing these facilities and that the enforcement was in alignment with the Federal Ministry of Environment’s retreat in Kaduna on Environmental Compliance Monitoring and Enforcement for 2024.
Mr. Jauro further elaborated on NESREA’s mandate to ensure compliance with environmental standards and regulations in Nigeria. The agency’s enforcement activities led to the closure of 13 facilities in the FCT due to violations such as failing to comply with Environmental Impact Assessment, Environmental Audit, Environmental Management Plans, and Environmental Permit requirements.
The director-general highlighted that the environmental concerns addressed in the closures encompassed both the “Green” and “Brown” sectors. A total of 10 facilities in the green sector and three in the brown sector were sealed after exhausting all communication attempts regarding their environmental status. Additionally, some facilities that had previously been sealed were found to have broken the Federal Government seals, leading to the imposition of punitive measures.
NESREA’s enforcement actions are not limited to the FCT, as Mr. Jauro announced plans to replicate similar enforcement activities in all states of the Federation. The agency aims to address the high level of non-compliance with environmental laws across the country and ensure that facilities adhere to the regulations set in place by the government.
In conclusion, the enforcement efforts of NESREA serve as a reminder to all industries and businesses to prioritize environmental compliance and sustainability. By holding non-compliant facilities accountable, the agency is working towards a cleaner and healthier environment for all Nigerians.
