The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has recently been facing a situation involving a circulating audio recording on social media. The audio purportedly features an NDLEA officer negotiating a payment of N5 million for the release of a US-based Nigerian who was allegedly arrested at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos. The individual in the audio is said to be in possession of contraband items. However, the NDLEA has officially disassociated itself from this audio recording.
According to the spokesman of the NDLEA, the agency has investigated the incident and determined that it is the work of scammers. The NDLEA officer mentioned in the audio conversation does not exist, and the Nigerian man pictured in the audio is not in the agency’s custody. The NDLEA has issued a warning to the family members involved in this case, advising them not to fall victim to scammers who may be requesting money for the release of their relative.
The NDLEA spokesperson emphasized the importance of not sharing sensitive information about travel plans with loved ones abroad to prevent criminal elements from exploiting the information for fraudulent activities. The agency has encountered similar schemes in the past where scammers contact potential victims claiming that their relatives have been arrested at international airports for drug-related offenses. Subsequently, the scammers demand exorbitant amounts of money for the release of the alleged detainees.
Mr. Babafemi, the NDLEA spokesperson, urged individuals who may receive such calls to remain calm and seek clarification directly from the agency through official contact lines such as +2347064670026 and +2348033326327. The NDLEA has successfully thwarted several attempts by scammers in the past by working closely with concerned family members who contacted the agency for assistance.
In conclusion, the NDLEA is committed to protecting the public from fraudulent schemes and ensuring the safety and security of Nigerian citizens both domestically and internationally. It is essential for individuals to exercise caution and vigilance when dealing with unexpected requests for money or sensitive information to prevent falling victim to scams. If anyone encounters a similar situation or has concerns about a relative’s travel status, they are encouraged to reach out to the NDLEA for assistance and clarification.
